Description

Leaves: Opposite; simple; 3 lobed with 3 main veins and lobes pointing forward; few small teeth; 1-1/2" to 3" wide; deciduous; shiny green and glabrous when mature; petiole 1-1/2" to 3" long; yellow, orange, or red fall color.

Twigs/buds: Twigs gray-brown and hairy at first, but become darker and hairless in the second year; thin; have small lenticels. Buds rich brown, pyramid-shaped, and 4-angled; scales pointed with hairy edges, overlapping.

Flowers/fruit: Fruit a samara; 3/4" to 1" long; wings parallel; fall maturing.

Bark: After a few years becomes gray, orange, brown and scaly; attractive.

Wood: Information unavailable.

General: Native to China. Name sometimes spelled A. buergerianum. Fairly drought resistant. Shade intolerant.

Landscape Use: This small to medium-sized tree is rarely planted in Utah and may be hard to find, but its fall color makes it worth trying. Colors very late in the fall. Zones 5-9.
