Description
Leaves: Alternate, simple; 3" to 5" long; deciduous; glabrous beneath; two to four prominent glands on petiole near blade.
Twigs/buds: Twigs medium textured, glabrous, reddish brown, with prominent lenticels. Buds scaly, red-brown like twig, sharply pointed.
Flowers/fruit: Flowers perfect, pink, 1" to 1-1/2", in small clusters present in late April or early May. Fruit a 1/3" diameter purple to black drupe.
Bark: Shiny reddish-brown with prominent horizontal ridges or lenticels.
Wood: Information unavailable.
General: Medium-sized tree native to Japan. Shade intolerant. Thorns or spines that can be dangerous; use thornless varieties if possible. Fruit and/or plant part can be nuisances; use fruitless varieties if possible.
Landscape Use: Good landscape tree that should be used more. Bark very attractive. Good fall color. Zones 4-7.
