Description

Leaves: Alternate, simple; usually doubly serrate; 1" to 4" long; deciduous; hairy on veins beneath; glands on petiole near blade.

Twigs/buds: Twigs medium texture, reddish brown, with prominent lenticels. Buds scaly, hairy, red-brown like twig.

Flowers/fruit: Flowers perfect, pink or white, single or double, in small groups that open in March or April before the leaves. Fruit a 1/3" diameter drupe (cherry); red at first, then black when mature.

Bark: Gray-brown; somewhat furrowed, ridged, and scaly with age.

Wood: Easily splits due to wind or ice; little information available.

General: Small to medium-sized tree; native to Japan. Shade intolerant.

Landscape Use: Weeping form is common and usually is grafted several feet above the ground. Should be a fairly good, reliable tree in the landscape, but know what you are getting since cultivars vary widely. Zones 4-9.
