Program: Athens-Clarke County Master Composter Program

Description: Established in 2011 as a partnership between Athens-Clarke County Extension and the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department, the Georgia Master Composter Program is an adult education course and Extension Volunteer program.  Master Composters complete a nine-week training course that covers all aspects of the composting process.  Classes are taught by UGA faculty, Athens-Clarke County and US Forest Service staff, and small and commercial business owners.  Topics include the chemistry and microbiology of composting, types of and reasons for composting, composting techniques and teaching tools.  As Extension volunteers, Master Composters then use this information to share composting basics with their family, friends and the community.  To date, the Georgia Master Composter Program has trained 56 participants in the Athens area.

Program: Sustainable Agriculture

Description: The Sustainable Agriculture program at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia focuses on production systems that build soil carbon in the Southeast including conservation tillage systems using cover crops, management intensive grazing, and organic production.  We link faculty, extension, farmers through newsletters, Facebook, our webpage, fields and trainings to provide science-based solutions to make agriculture profitably, environmentally-friendly and good for farmers, farm workers and the community.


Program: Athens Area Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program

Description: Established in 1990, the Athens Area Master Gardener Program provides novice and seasoned gardeners with an intensive educational experience in horticulture principles, practices and pest management. Classes are taught by University of Georgia faculty and other subject area experts. Class topics include botany, plant physiology, soils, flowering plants, vegetable gardening, fruit gardening, herb gardening, organic gardening, entomology, plant pathology and disease control, landscape design, plant propagation, composting and more.

Program: Athens-Clarke County Master Naturalist Program

Description: The Georgia Master Naturalist program is an adult environmental education course developed by UGA Extension and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources for people interested in exploring the habitats, ecosystems and the natural environments of our state. The Program is a combination of lectures and hands-on field studies taught by UGA faculty and field experts.
