Hello 4-H’ers and Volunteers,
Can you believe it's almost summer?
We have a fun summer coming up with lots of fun opportunities! Summer Camps are posted on our website with open registrations extension.usu.edu/saltlake/4h . Our challenge to you is to try something new. If you have never sewn, try our Salt Lake Stitchers sewing camp. If you don’t think you wouldn’t be good at science, enroll in STEM Camp or Space Camp. We have a camp in every project area, this is your chance to try something new! Then, come meet new friends and fellow 4-Hers while enjoying 3 days and 2 nights of Family Camp, where the best memories are made! We, the Salt Lake County 4-H Team, want to wish you all good luck on your final exams, graduation, and all you need to accomplish to finish up your school year! Take a deep breath and finish off strong!
May will be your last chance to check out our community clubs and get involved, before they break for summer and return in the Fall!!

Horse Bowl and Judging County Contest

Details:This is the SLCo county contest for our Intermediate and Senior Horse Bowl and Horse Judging and Jr. Skill-a-thon events. It is open to youth 8-18 years old, who are actively enrolled in 4-H and will qualify you to compete in the state contest in June during 4-H Classic. You will sign up as an individual and we will create teams based on registration age groups, and scores.

Bastian Hippologists: Horseless Horse Club

The Salt Lake County Horse Ambassadors are back with their exciting club for all horse-loving kids—whether you have a horse or just wish you did. This club is the perfect chance to dive into the equine world, learn new skills, and connect with others who share your passion! It is for all 4-H ages, grades 3-12 who want to learn more about horses. This month the ambassadors have planned an interactive station game where each station features a different horse related topic and hands on activity. It will also be our last horseless horse club meeting until the Fall.

Lil’ Paws and Claws: Small Animal Club

Details: Showtime Success: Piecing Together Your Competitive Edge! Clinic:
Calling all livestock and horse project youth! This interactive workshop is designed for youth who are competing in livestock or horse showing events. Participants will learn how to set SMART goals, build resilience within their animal project, develop responsibility, and master purposeful practice—all while having fun and connecting their growth to success in the show ring. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, participants will discover how intentional actions, and a positive mindset can help them navigate the competitive world and will leave them with tools to help handle the struggles that can come with owning, training and showing an animal. Open to Salt Lake County 4-H or FFA youth who are 8 years old and in 3rd grade through 12th grade, registration will be through ZSuite if you are a 4-H Member, if you aren't you can use the external registration link.

SLCo Mock Horse Show & Clinic
Date: Friday May 22 & Saturday May 23, 2026
Time: All Day
Location: Bastian Agricultural Center
Details: This event is ideal for SLCo 4-H riders of all ages and skill levels to get a head start on the 2025 4-H show season in a welcoming environment. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and dive deeper into what makes a “blue ribbon” pattern so that you can ride more confidently. This will be considered a "no bath, no bling" event, but you will need to wear western attire, a 4-H patch, and of course your helmet! This event is designed to be one horse per rider (so if you have a western individual horse and a 2-handed horse you'll need to decide which one you want to bring).
What to expect:
*Opportunity to practice the 2025 show events and learn tips & tricks to improve your scores or troubleshoot problems
*Receive real-time feedback from industry professionals & increase pattern execution skills
*Practice Gymkhana Gig and leave with some drills to help you practice speed events.

Animal Care Collective

Details: This month, members will learn and review veterinary terminology through a fun, interactive game of Jeopardy with a twist. Participants will work in teams to test their knowledge of common veterinary terms, definitions, and concepts.
This activity is a great way to build vocabulary, strengthen understanding of veterinary language, and grow confidence using proper terminology in real-life situations — all while having a little fun.

Intermountain & Beyond the Beartooths Livestock Judging Camp

Details: Intermountain & Beyond the Beartooths Livestock Judging Camp is a hands-on, educational event that is perfect for youth & coaches to enhance their skillset in livestock judging! The FCS & Career Readiness State Contests
Date: Monday, July 13, 2026

Who: Youth Ages 15 - 18
Location: Utah State University, Logan Campus
Registration Costs:- Youth: $35 - Adults: $15
- Lodging (optional): $30/person
Utah 4-H Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS), World of Work, and Public Speaking state contests—held during the annual 4-H Classic at Utah State University—give high school youth the chance to apply real-world knowledge and showcase communication, career, and life skills in a competitive setting.
FCS contests emphasize practical life skills such as nutrition, food preparation, clothing and textiles, financial literacy, and family life through events like Favorite Foods, Fashion Review, FCS Bowl, presentations, and skill-a-thon.
The World of Work contest focuses on career readiness, with youth demonstrating employability skills like interviewing, resume development, and professional communication.
Public Speaking contests—including prepared speech and impromptu speaking —help participants build confidence, organization, and persuasive communication skills. Together, these contests promote leadership, critical thinking, and workforce preparedness, with top participants often advancing to national-level opportunities.
This registration will include lunch with optional lodging.

Project Ambassador applications for Agriscience, FCS, and STEM are now open in ZSuite!
Project Ambassadors gain valuable leadership experience while working with their team to develop a curriculum that they teach at TRY Training in the winter. Participating in the ambassador program is a great way for the youth to grow both personally and professionally within 4-H.
Applications are due May 10th in ZSuite. Applicants will need to upload the following:

Come Get Real with Us

Details:The USU Extension Youth & Family Resilience Team is hosting a Salt Lake County-wide experiential opportunity for youth currently in grades 6-12 to develop their resilience skills. The event, called REAL (Resilience Education Adventures for Life) Day, is hosted at Camp Williams in Bluffdale, Utah. We provide youth a half day of physical challenges facilitated by members of the National Guard as well as a half day of classroom experiences where they learn and apply strategies and learned skills to a range of resilience building situations - building up their mental capacities.
The team provides free transportation from locations in the county; families will need to drop their child off and pick up at one chosen location (drop off and pick up must be from the same bus stop location). Locations are expected to be Kearns or Taylorsville HS, Cyprus HS, Granger HS, and Cottonwood HS - these are anticipated and will be verified in the coming days but will help with communicating with families anticipated locations.We provide lunch as well as breakfast snacks, and snack-snacks. All youth will be provided with a string backpack to carry their snacks and sunglasses.
Youth should bring
- a water bottle, preferably labeled with their name,
- wear weather appropriate attire that includes
- closed toe shoes (sneakers)
- T-shirt,
- possible light jacket based on weather that day,
- jeans or shorts that are not revealing and can be worn for physical movement.
- Sunscreen (pre-apply)
- All other personal items should be left at home, including phones.
- This is to avoid items lost at the National Guard base as we do not have access to retrieve lost or forgotten items.
