Zion Tunnel

1929

2006

Description:

Plate 1193X. Zion Tunnel 1929 – 2006 Viewed west-northwest down Pine Creek from the third gallery in Zion Tunnel. A large section of the left cliff collapsed during the morning of April 28, 1958 temporarily blocking the tunnel (Garate 1989). To prevent falling rock from entering the tunnel, the Park Service installed steel doors on this gallery. As all stopping in the tunnel is now prohibited to avoid vehicle congestion, the Park Service provided special access to repeat this photograph. Riparian vegetation has increased along Pine Creek. Pinyon, juniper, turbinella oak, and Utah serviceberry have all increased. Road-cuts and fill have naturally revegetated. Note the construction camp on the left edge of the 1929 photo. That site too has naturally revegetated.
