Zion Canyon

Description:

Plate 1195X. Zion Canyon 1928 – 2006 Viewed north up Zion Canyon in Zion National Park. Angels Landing (5,790 ft.) is on the left. In 1928, this area was a Park Service campground and the building a temporary museum. Today, the building is a Park Service residence in what is now the Grotto Picnic Area. The trees in front of the building are boX elder and were probably planted, as were many of the cottonwoods in the old campground. As the mature trees die, however, they are not being replaced because all the new seedlings are repeatedly browsed by mule deer (Steen 1999, Ripple and Beschta 2006). Cottonwoods have matured and now block the distant view.
