Description:

Plate 1194X. Virgin River 1872 – 2006 Viewed northwest up the Virgin River in Zion Canyon. The river channel has migrated to the south and downcut approXimately 15 feet (Hereford et al 1996). The Park Service has built a parking area at the start of Zion Narrows. Note the beaver-felled cottonwoods in the 1872 photograph. Today, as the mature cottonwoods die, they are not being replaced due to eXcessive browsing of seedlings by mule deer (Steen 1999, Ripple and Beschta 2006).
