Vermillion Castle Guard Station

Description:

Plate 1386X. Vermillion Castle Guard Station 1941 – 2006 Viewed southeast to the Forest Service Guard Station at Vermillion Castle Campground on Bowery Creek south of Parowan, Utah. The peak in the distance is Noahs Ark (8,596 ft). The guard station, as well as most of the campground has been abandoned. Pinyon, juniper, conifers, oakbrush, and other mountain brush species have increased. The comfort station seen in the 1941 image (photo lower right) is now hidden from view by pinyon and juniper. The meadow behind the guard station had been planted to crested wheatgrass but that area, as well as the foreground, has been heavily invaded by rubber rabbitbrush and sagebrush.
