Plate 483X. Vermilion Cliffs 1944 – 2004 Viewed northeast to the Vermilion Cliffs east of Kanab, UT. The photopoint is on the old road right-of-way. U.S. Highway 89 has been rerouted 150 yards to the north and is visible in the retake. Pinyon and juniper have increased. Wyoming big sage has colonized the cleared field seen in the 1944 image. Some individual sage plants, however, have died during the recent drought. Green rabbitbrush and cheatgrass are also present.
