Upper Sheep Creek Flat

2004

Description:

Plate 400X. Upper Sheep Creek Flat 1965 – 2004 Viewed west-southwest across the upper portion of Sheep Creek Flat below Bryce Canyon National Park. The area was chained a few years prior to when the original photograph was taken. The slash was later piled and the area planted with crested wheatgrass. Despite those treatments, pinyon and juniper have reinvaded the site. Mountain big sagebrush, oakbrush, Utah serviceberry, bitterbrush, and birchleaf mountain mahogany are also present. The area appears to be lightly-used, mule deer winter range, and was not grazed by livestock in 2004. Stock ponds built at the time the site was treated have not held water for several years due to the continued drought. Shown in the original photo is Vern Shakespear, who was cutting juniper missed during the chaining.
