Um Valley

1916

2001

Description:

Plate 339. UM VALLEY 1916-2001 Viewed northeast over the Left and Right Forks of UM Creek to Windstorm Peak (10,610 ft) on the Fishlake Plateau. Silver sage has declined in the foreground. The shrubless areas in the two photographs are small, subirrigated meadows in swells and other depressions. Conifers have increased, especially the stand in the lower right-center. Aspen has increased in height and some stands may also have increased in size, but most clones have not regenerated in many years due to excessive browsing of aspen suckers by cattle, elk, and mule deer. Willows seen in the original along the Left Fork appear to have declined. Beaver (Caster canadensis) activity was plentiful in the Potholes, but there was no aspen regeneration. Aspen has been logged along the ridge south (right) of Windstorm Peak and just above the near conifers. Note the cattle in the original and cattle were present when the retake was made.
