U M Valley

1915

1995

Description:

Plate 5.U M VALLEY: 1915 - 1995 Aspen (Populus tremuloides) has increased in height since the 1915 photo, but some clones in 1995 were deteriorating, such as the one in the lower right. Willows (Salix spp.) have declined by 1995, and most exhibit signs of repeated browsing. A few conifers have invaded the willow and aspen communities, but the distant hillsides were obscured by haze in the 1915 photo and it is not possible to tell if conifers have increased there as well. Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) also appears to have increased over the years, especially in the foreground.
