Tippets Valley Sheep Corral

1938

2005

Description:

Plate 1116X. Tippets Valley Sheep Corral 1938 – 2005 Viewed southwest outside the old sheep corral in Tippets Valley - - see Plates 1112x and 1113X. In 1938, the area outside the old corral was very heavily grazed by cattle and horses, while the inside - - see Plate 1117x - - had not been grazed in many years, as the corral was no longer used to hold sheep. Today, the wooden poles have rotted away and thus, the old corral has not excluded cattle for many years. In 2005, both the inside and outside were actively being grazed by cattle. Since the initial image was made, all the meadow outside the old corral has been treated and reseeded with smooth brome - - see Plates 1112x and 1113X. The inside, however, is native Stipa spp. and silver sage. In the distance, aspen has declined, while conifers have increased. Some aspen regenerated 30 years ago when mule deer numbers were low, but not before or since due to repeated browsing (Kay and Bartos 2000) - - see Plates 1114x and 1115X. Today all those aspen saplings have been highlined by deer, elk, and cattle.
