Rock Canyon

Plate 109 ROCK CANYON: 1945 - 1956 - 1999 The view is at the head of Rock Canyon below Jacks Peak. The 1945 and 1956 photos show active erosion channels. Sometime thereafter the area was contour trenched, gully-plugged, and seeded by the Forest Service. Note the standing water behind one of the gully plugs in the 1999 photo. Mountain big sage (Artemisia tridentata vaseyana), snowberry (Symphoricarpos sp.), and current (Ribes spp.) are the most common shrubs; the seeded grasses include smooth brome (Bromus inermis), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata), and intermediate wheatgrass (Agropyron intermedium).
