Spectacle Lake

1903

2002

Description:

Plate 76X. Spectacle Lake 1903-2002 Viewed south to Spectacle Lake on the Aquarius Plateau (a.k.a. Boulder Top). The 1903 photograph was taken before a dam was constructed on the lake’s outlet. After the dam was built it raised the water level and flooded out the lakeside vegetation. Spruce have increased in height, numbers, and distribution. Note the new dam in the retake that was built after the original structure failed in 1938 - - see Plate 77x. The lake level was lower in the retake due to the extended drought and downstream water demands. Spectacle Lake feeds the West Fork of Boulder Creek.
