Pine Valley

1870

2004

Description:

Plate 652X. Pine Valley 1870 – 2004 Viewed north across Pine Valley. The original photopoint is now blocked by a dense growth of mountain brush, pinyon, and juniper, so the retake was made from the nearest open area. The 1870 photograph was made with a telephoto lens. Note how open the distant hillsides were in 1870 and how pinyon, juniper, curlleaf mountain mahogany, and Utah serviceberry have increased. Willows along the Santa Clara River appear to have declined. The town has expanded, mostly with summer or second homes. Sagebrush has declined in the distance as pinyon and juniper have increased. Plates 652x, 653x, and 654x were taken from the same photopoint and form a panorama.
