Pine Creek

1930

2006

Description:

Plate 1177X. Pine Creek 1930 – 2006 Viewed west-southwest down Pine Creek from above The Great Arch in Zion National Park. The retake was made from the end of the Canyon Overlook Trail. The original, however, was taken further to the right and higher but that photopoint was beyond my rock-climbing abilities. Although the perspective is somewhat different, it is clear that the road-cuts and fills leading to the Zion Tunnel have naturally revegetated. Note the work camp in the original image between Nevada Switchback and Sandwich Rock (Garate 1989), and how that area too has naturally revegetated. Pinyon and juniper appear to have increased, as have oakbrush, Utah serviceberry, and trubinella oak. Utah Highway 9 has been paved.
