Plate 1172X. Checkerboard Mesa 1929 – 2006 Viewed southwest to Checkerboard Mesa in Zion National Park. Utah Highway 9 has been paved and the bridge over Clear Creek has been rebuilt. Woody vegetation now blocks the original photopoint, so the retake was made from the nearest open area. Ponderosa pine, pinyon, and juniper have all increased, as have forest fuels. The road-fill has naturally revegetated.
