Cave Knoll

2007

Description:

Plate 1459X. Cave Knoll 1872 – 2007 Viewed northeast across Lee Valley from Cave Knoll on the Lower Kolob Plateau in Zion National Park. Pine Valley Peak (7,415 ft.) is on the right. The ponderosa pine nearest the camera has died. The cleared field in the retake is a private inholding. All woody species have increased. This includes pinyon, juniper, oak, mountain brush, ponderosa pine, and sagebrush. The vegetation today is entirely different from what it was in the past. This is due to a lack of low-intensity fires since European settlement.
