Big Flat Spring

1938

1999

Description:

Plate 145 BIG FLAT SPRING: 1938 - 1999 The stock watering trough in the 1938 photo is at a spring just south of the Big Flat Guard Station. It is the same trough as in Plate 144, but from approximately 100 feet south. Sometime between the 1938 and 1999 the trough was relocated approximately 100 yards downhill. The area continues to be grazed in 1999, but not as heavily as in 1938. Conifers, primarily spruce (Picea engelmannii), in the 1999 photo appear to have increased in abundance while aspen (Populus tremuloides) has declined. All of the aspen stands have been heavily invaded by conifers and have not regenerated.
