Kate Weigel

Biography

Kate is an artist, educator and builder originally from Maine. She is currently the AmeriCorps Permaculture Initiative Assistant at USU Moab Extension for 2020. She has a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Sculpture from New York University. Kate is a former Global Academic Fellow in Visual Art at NYU Abu Dhabi and also the former co-founder of the Columbus Learning Cooperative, an alternative to school based on self-directed learning for kids and teens. In 2011, Kate participated in Bike and Build (ME2SB11), biking from Maine to Santa Barbara to raise money and awareness for affordable housing causes while building houses along the way. Since then, she has been active in affordable housing, completing an AmeriCorps term with Habitat for Humanity in Columbus, OH and later moving to Moab in 2019 to participate in an internship with Community Rebuilds. Her passions also include rock climbing, scenic carpentry, social justice and backpacking.
