Permaculture Has Arrived at USU - 2013
Permaculture design has caught on at USU, and September and October will see a series of events to celebrate this concept. What is permaculture? Permaculture uses a systems approach to design, seeing the site – and the wider ecological and man-made systems interacting with the site – as connected. The design focus is on perennial agricultural ecosystems that emphasize renewability, sustainability, and self-sufficiency.
September 27th - 28th, 2013: Permaculture in Logan
On September 27, national permaculture, ecological restoration, and regenerative design expert and author Joel Glanzberg will come to the American West Heritage Center in Cache County, UT, to teach about permaculture design. At this all-day training, learn to break down traditional thought patterns, expand design possibilities, and learn key permaculture principles and techniques. On day two, be part of history as USU builds Utah's first official campus permaculture garden. You will have the opportunity to provide design and interpretive sign input into the campus garden. Garden sponsors include: USU Extension Sustainability, Community Rebuilds, Utah's Own, Slow Food Utah, Bill and Diane Oblock, USU Facilities, and the Rock Haus Gym.
The training cost is $25 dollars for adults, $15 dollars for students.
September 30th - October 1st, 2013: Permaculture in Moab
On September 30, national permaculture, ecological restoration, and regenerative design expert and author Joel Glanzberg will be at USU Moab's campus to teach about permaculture design. At this all-day training, Joel will help those in the Moab area learn to break down traditional thought patterns, expand design possibilities, and learn key permaculture principles and techniques. On day two, participants will design a permaculture landscape for the Community Rebuilds Campus!
The training cost is $25 dollars for adults, $15 dollars for students.
The permaculture workshops were designed as a collaboration between USU Extension Sustainability and Community Rebuilds.
October 2nd, 2013:
Gary Paul Nabhan speaks at USU&From 7:00-8:00pm at USU Logan's campus in the Eccles Science Learning Center (ESLC 130), Gary Paul Nabhan will speak about permaculture principles. The event is free and is sponsored by the Department of Environment and Society. Gary's talk is entitled "Tapping Into the Wisdom of the Desert: Sustainably Growing Food in the Face of Climate Change & Water Scarcity." Gary Nabhan is a former McArthur "genius grant" recipient, faculty member at the University of Arizona, and noted expert on pollinators, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and indigenous food systems among other things.
