A food distribution event sponsored by the Utah State University Cache County Extension office, the Cache Community Food Pantry and Cache Refugee and Immigrant Connection will be held Saturday, Dec. 19, at the English Language Center in Logan, 1544 North 200 West, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Through a COVID-19 grant proposal, funding was awarded to bring food relief and nutrition education to culturally diverse communities in the area. The groups are coordinating to distribute 12 tons of fresh food to vulnerable community members affected by the pandemic.

According to Celina Wille, USU Extension assistant professor, in November, the partnering organizations distributed 8.8 tons of fresh food, food staples, COVID-19 prevention educational materials and other items that benefitted 300 local families.

“Our organizers are involving local ethic grocers, including procuring Halal products, to offer foods that appeal to the food preferences of community members,” she said. “USU Extension will make educational materials available in the Spanish, Somali, Tigrinya, Arabic and Karen languages.”

Wille said the group expects to serve 400 families through the no-contact distribution process, and it will be on a first-come, first-served basis. For further information, contact Wille at 435-602-2871, or Celina.wille@usu.edu.
