USU EXTENSION HOSTS STEM EVENT FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, FAMILIES
Y of the STEM, a day-long event hosted by Utah State University Extension, will be held on April 12 at Red Mountain Elementary School in Ivins.
Students from Red Mountain Elementary School and Lava Ridge Intermediate School will spend the day learning about STEM and art. Families are invited to the evening event held from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
The event will focus on the individual aspects of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) as well incorporating artistic projects.
“STEM is more than just lab coats and coding – it is the foundation of manufacturing, food production, healthcare and much more that we simply cannot live without,” said Andrea Schmutz, USU Extension assistant professor. “Not only are there well-paying careers in STEM fields, but STEM experiences help create critical thinkers, problem solvers and innovators – skills that are beneficial in any career and in life in general.”
During the day, students will make water-powered flashlights, dowse for water, create water-related art pieces and watch a unique 360-degree video highlighting water and the role it plays in the community.
During the evening event, families can enjoy interactive booths with rocket making, ozobots, art displays, water-related crafts and more. A movie will be projected onto the Art Dome to create an outdoor movie-viewing experience. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner.
The event will be held at Red Mountain Elementary School, 263 E. 200 S. in Ivins. Admission is free.
