Food Security The 1996 World Food Summit defines food security as "when all people, at all times, have physical and economical access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life."
Hunger Hunger refers to a potential consequence of food insecurity. Hunger is discomfort, illness, weakness, or pain caused by prolonged, involuntary lack of food (Healthy People, 2030).
