First dates can often be awkward and uncomfortable, but when readily prepared, they can be magical and exciting! It seems that most people just want to be heard and understood. Not sure what to talk about on a first date? This blog will help to get you on your feet when exploring new relationships and making that first special connection. Here are a number of conversation starters to help spark a connection between you and your date.

Start Simple

Begin simple and get a feel for the evening by asking some “Get to Know You” questions. You may want to talk about the area you currently live in, discussing likes and dislikes. Here are a few questions to ask:

  • What brought you to the area?
  • What do you like about it? dislike?
  • Are you liking the community?
  • How long have you lived here?

If you feel like the vibe is there, ask a few more questions about their background and family! It’s always nice getting a feel for a future partners family life and their beliefs surrounding the topic. You may also find yourself learning something new about their family dynamic or culture!

  • Where are you from?
  • Where did you grow up?
  • Tell me about your family.
  • Are they close by?

Turn It Up a Notch

Now for the fun part! Once you feel the ice has been broken and conversation is flowing nicely, ask any of the below questions to get a better feel for their personality. It is beneficial to ask intentional questions that connect to your own life, which will help to further a possible connection.

  • If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
  • Out of all the places you have traveled, which did you love the most?
  • What is a book you have read that left you feeling inspired?
  • What are a few of your hobbies? Do you have any you would like to explore more?
  • What is your dream job?
  • Thoughts on animals? Do you have any pets?
  • If you had an entire day to yourself tomorrow, what would you do with it?

Something To Consider

In the spirit of addressing questions to ask, it is also important to consider topics to avoid. Having deep conversations and asking personal questions is so important within a relationship, but probably not the best choice for a first date! Below are a few topics or questions you may want to steer clear of for future first dates:

  • Discussing a recent ex or past relationships
  • Finances or asking how much they make
  • Family drama
  • Previous sexual relationships
  • Political beliefs
  • Religion
  • Over-sharing personal problems

Many of these topics can be discussed casually without having awkward moments come up, but it’s good to have them on your radar. First dates are just a taste of what your future could be together, so go in with a clean palate.

Finally, the most important thing to remember when going on a first date is to be yourself. Don’t shy away from who you are naturally and know that the right person is going to love you for who you are. Using the questions above can help break the ice and allow for unique, exciting conversations!
