Winter in Utah transforms the state into a snowy wonderland, offering countless opportunities for outdoor fun that everybody will love. Whether you’re a fan of adrenaline-pumping adventures, or a more serene experience in nature, Utah has something for everyone. Here are some of the best (and my personal favorite!) winter activities to help your family make unforgettable memories in the coming months.

1. Skiing and Snowboarding

As I'm sure we're all aware, Utah is famous for its "Greatest Snow on Earth,” and there’s no better way to enjoy it than by hitting the slopes! Resorts like Park City Mountain, Deer Valley, Snowbird, and Beaver Mountain offer ski and snowboard lessons for beginners, making them perfect for families with kids. Many resorts also have dedicated children’s areas, ensuring a safe and fun environment for young ones. Don’t forget to check for family discounts or package deals to make the most of your day on the mountain!

2. Snow Tubing Adventures

If skiing isn’t your thing, snow tubing can be a more accessible (and still fun) option for all ages. Popular tubing parks like Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway and Woodward Park City offer groomed lanes and lifts to make the experience easy and enjoyable. Some locations even have nighttime tubing with lights for some more added excitement!

3. Ice Skating

Lace up your skates at one of Utah’s picturesque skating rinks! The Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake City offers an outdoor rink surrounded by city lights, while Utah Olympic Oval provides a cozy indoor experience. For a unique adventure, head to Midway Ice Rink, where you can skate under the stars with stunning mountain views.

4. Explore Utah’s National Parks in Winter

Winter is a magical time to visit any of Utah’s iconic national parks. Places like Bryce Canyon and Arches National Park become even more breathtaking when dusted with snow. One of my favorite memories is seeing Moab's red rocks in the snow for the first time. The cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable, and the smaller crowds provide a more peaceful experience. Bring along your kids to explore shorter trails like the Queen’s Garden in Bryce or the Windows Section in Arches. Be sure to dress warmly and check trail/park conditions before heading out.

5. Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing

For families who enjoy a slower pace, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are excellent ways to explore Utah’s winter landscapes. Big Cottonwood Canyon and Logan Canyon offer family-friendly trails suitable for all skill levels. Snowshoeing requires minimal equipment and is easy for kids to pick up, making it a great introduction to winter sports. Many parks and sporting stores will rent equipment, so there’s no need to invest in gear right away.

6. Sledding and Building Snow Forts

Nothing beats the simple joy of sledding and playing in the snow. Utah has plenty of parks and open spaces perfect for sledding, such as Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City or Rock Canyon Park in Provo. Bring your sleds and snowboards and spend the day racing down the hills. Afterward, work together as a family to build a snowman or snow fort or have a friendly snowball fight!

7. Visit the Midway Ice Castles

A must-see winter attraction, the Midway Ice Castles are a dazzling display of frozen beauty. Kids will love exploring the tunnels, slides, and sculptures crafted entirely from ice. The castles are lit up at night, creating a magical ambiance that’s perfect for family photos. Be sure to book tickets in advance, as this popular destination often sells out.

8. Wildlife Watching at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge

For a quieter outdoor activity, take a trip to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge near Brigham City. In winter, the refuge is home to a variety of bird species, including bald eagles. Pack binoculars and enjoy a scenic drive through the refuge’s auto tour loop or take a short walk on one of the trails. This is a fantastic opportunity to teach kids about wildlife and conservation.

9. Hot Springs Soaking

Warm up after a day in the snow by visiting one of Utah’s natural hot springs. Crystal Hot Springs in Honeyville is family-friendly and offers pools of varying temperatures. Another popular option is Homestead Crater in Midway, where you can soak in a unique geothermal spring inside a limestone dome. It’s a relaxing way to cap off your winter adventures.

10. Snowmobiling Thrills

For families seeking a high-energy activity, snowmobiling is a thrilling way to explore Utah’s backcountry. Guided tours are available at locations like Bear River Lodge in the Uinta Mountains and Daniels Summit Lodge near Heber City. These tours cater to all skill levels, and many operators offer kid-friendly snowmobiles for younger riders.

Tips for a Successful Winter Outing

  • Layer Up: Dress in warm, waterproof layers to stay comfortable in the snow. Don’t forget hats, gloves, and insulated boots.
  • Pack Snacks: Bring plenty of water and high-energy snacks to keep everyone fueled.
  • Plan Ahead: Check weather conditions and make reservations where necessary to avoid disappointment.
  • Safety First: Ensure everyone stays safe by following posted guidelines and supervising young children.

Winter in Utah is a season of adventure, discovery, and family bonding. With so many outdoor activities to choose from, you can create a winter itinerary that suits everyone in your family. So bundle up, head outside, and make this winter one to remember!
