Many GNAR communities have stunning historic main streets and buildings which foster and support the communities character. Preserving a communities character often looks like preserving the buildings and spaces which engender that character. Historical Preservation has been a focus of many governments, communities, and organizations for many years, here we list several resources which can help your community in preservation.

Despite its name, the Colorado Preservation, Inc. has many resources and programs that can benefit any state looking to preserve their history:
- A Preservation Toolbox that has resources around a variety of topics, including site specific resources (ie: Barn, Church, School, etc.)
- An annual Saving Places® Conference, which is the largest statewide preservation conference in the country.
- The Colorado focused Most Endangered Places Program.
The American Association for State and Local History provides many free (and membership-only) resources for individuals and organizations looking into the myriad issues surrounding preserving local history, including webinars, position papers, technical leaflets, and more.

Preserve America Communities is a designation program that recognizes communities that protect and celebrate their heritage; use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization; and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs. On this page you can apply for a site to become federally recognized and access additional information about their program.
Preservation through Partnership: this is the goal of the Certified Local Government (CLG) Program. Local, State, and Federal governments work together in the Federal Preservation Program to help communities save the irreplaceable historic character of places. Through the certification process, communities make a local commitment to historic preservation.
For over 20 years the annual Saving Places Conference has been THE historic preservation conference in the region, gaining a reputation far extending our Colorado borders.
