Biography

As a retired US Army Clinical Chaplain and Professor at USU Extension, Dr. Troy Allan is dedicated to advancing mental health research and education, particularly in rural, teen, and veteran populations. With a focus on innovative approaches such as equine-assisted learning, awe-based interventions, and holistic mental health strategies, Troy aims to improve the well-being of underserved communities. His work integrates leadership, rigorous scholarship, and creativity to address complex social and psychological challenges. In the classroom, Troy is passionate about fostering critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and resilience in students, preparing them to tackle real-world mental health issues through a collaborative framework. He believes that teaching is a transformative tool, essential for developing future leaders who value diversity, social justice, and holistic well-being. Equally committed to research and writing, Troy continually explores the intersections of mental health, awe, and trauma care, contributing to both academic and public discourse. His rigorous approach to scholarship fuels his dedication to finding innovative solutions, enhancing both individual and community wellness through evidence-based practices.

Teaching Interests

Some of the courses I would be excited to develop include Mental Health and Physical Activity in Youth, Trauma-Informed Approaches to Health Education, and Integrating Holistic Mental Health Practices into Community Outreach. More specifically, I am interested in teaching courses on Awe and Mental Health, Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning, and Veteran Mental Health and Wellness.

Mental Health Interventions: Specializing in teen mental health and rural populations. Equine-Assisted Learning & Therapy: Expertise in ground-based equine-assisted learning, focusing on literacy and mental health.
Trauma-Informed Care: Experience in providing care for trauma, especially within military and veteran contexts.
Awe-Based Mental Health Practices: Research and application of awe in improving mental well being.
Classroom Instruction & Curriculum Development: Developing and teaching mental health focused curricula in higher education.
Qualitative & Quantitative Research Methods: Skilled in designing and conducting research studies on mental health, literacy, and community wellness.
Grant Writing & Program Development: Experienced in writing successful grants for literacy and mental health programs.
Veteran Wellness & Support: Deep understanding of veteran-specific mental health issues and interventions.
Leadership & Team Development: Proven leadership in both military and academic settings, with a focus on mental health initiatives.
