Clean water for fish and aquatic life is one of Utah's beneficial uses of water. The state sets water quality standards to protect waters that fall under this category of use. Since aquatic organisms spend all or most of their lives in the water, water quality parameters for fisheries are more strict than many other beneficial uses.

Aquatic wildlife includes cold and warm water species of game and nongame fish and aquatic life, waterfowl, shorebirds, and other water-oriented wildlife. This also includes the aquatic organisms in their food chain, such as macroinvertebrates.
