Agriculture may has many influences on water quality depending on the types of production. Overused fertilizer is flushed into surface waters through irrigation and canals. Livestock increase erosion along stream banks when fields are over grazed or animals are allowed to access the streams directly. Poorly managed manure also enters surface waters, polluting the waters with bacteria and nutrients.
Ground water wells and surface water withdrawls provide important sources of water
for home, recreation, animal, and crop uses.The responsibility for maintaining the
quality of groundwater and local surface water is up to the land owner. Improper maintenance can
lead to negative impacts on their household, local environment, farm, and neighbors.
These issues can be mitigated, however, by incorporating best management practices (BMPs) and following simple tips.
