Types of Pollution
Two main types of pollution influence water quality, point source pollution and nonpoint source pollution. Point source pollution comes from one source that you can easily point to (i.e. a factory or waste water treatment plant). Nonpoint source pollution comes from many diffuse sources. Point source pollution has largely been controlled by the Clean Water Act and other legislation and permitting. Much of the pollution currently found in our waterways comes from nonpoint source pollution which requires larger community action to address.
