How We Can Help

USU Extension offers expertise and pertinent information specific to the needs of our county

With more than 480 farms covering 217,000 acres in Washington County, and adding more than $7 million in annual production; agriculture is still a strong part of our community. From the open space agriculture provides to the way of life many of us enjoy, keeping a robust and diverse base is important to us.

After and extensive literature review and analysis of the community assets and needs of Washington County residents, USU Extension has focused its economic development efforts to six prioritized recommendations for leaders to consider when creating economic and workforce development strategies and programs:

  1. Build the broadband infrastructure of the future, and make sure people know where it is.
  2. When attracting remote workers, incorporate housing into your economic development strategy.
  3. Create spaces, places, and programs where remote workers can meet and network.
  4. When working to increase remote employment for local workers, focus workforce development efforts on skills aligned with remote work professions.
  5. When attracting remote workers, target workers that already have connections to your community.
  6. Invest in quality of life.
One way for Washington County to participate in the nation’s tech sector will be by building our own tech ecosystems and quality of life. The opportunity of remote work has shifted our focus away from from business recruitment with special deals like tax incentives and towards talent recruitment with services and amenities.

Our local strategy for promoting connection will be to focus on the basic block-and-tackling of building out homegrown tech ecosystems that are compelling to firms, entrepreneurs, and workers. This includes the hard work of:

  • Building authentic, differentiated tech clusters
  • Developing a skilled, abundant, and diverse digital workforce
  • Providing excellent broadband connectivity
  • Cultivating a vibrant tech community with plentiful networking opportunities and acceleration programs
  • Crafting an excellent quality of place, complete with top-notch schools; parks and greenspace; bike lanes; and co-working spaces
Also, vital to our community is thinking about how to manage the growth that will follow the arrival of hundreds of relocating tech workers who hail from areas that previously struggled with growth-related quality-of-life issues.
