Common gartersnakes are found in the northern, eastern and central areas of Utah. The type found in Utah is called the valley gartersnake. These snakes are usually 1-2 feet long, but some can reach lengths of 4 feet.
Gartersnakes hunt with their excellent sense of smell and heat sensitivity, tracking down different types of prey. They eat everything from earthworms, fish and amphibians to small mammals and small birds.
Garter snakes live in most moist habitats, and are active during the day and the night. They are also good swimmers!
During the winter, they find cover and hibernate until spring.
Cool Fact:
The females do not lay eggs, but rather give birth to 12-40 live babies.
