Cattails live in slow moving water. They get their name from their seed heads, which look like cat tails sticking straight up.
Cattails have roots that can sprout many new plants the grow in a dense group. They also spread by seeds, which are covered by little hairs that catch the wind and travel like tiny parachutes.
Cattails provide important food and cover for many animals, including marsh birds, ducks and geese, and muskrats.
Cool Fact:
Ancient humans made mats from cattails, but also used them for food and for padding.
