Mottled sculpin are native to Utah and are found in coldwater streams throughout the state.
They live on stream bottoms and eat insects, fish eggs, plant debris and crayfish.
They are a favorite food of trout so may be rare in trout streams unless the stream also has a lot of rocks or other hiding places.
Cool Fact:
Mottled sculpin turn upside down under rocks and lay eggs that then stick to the rocks. The eggs hatch in about two weeks.
During that time, the males guard the eggs and may fan them with their fins to make sure the eggs get enough oxygen.
