Redside Shiners are native to parts of Utah, including East Canyon Creek. They are in the minnow family, and are named because of the red streak on their side.
Redside shiners prefer slow moving water with aquatic plants. They can form large schools of fish.
These little fish eat almost anything, including aquatic insects and plants, tiny zooplankton, and small fish.
Redside shiners lay and fertilize their sticky eggs directly in the water. The eggs eventually attach to rocks, logs or plants and hatch out in just a few weeks.
Cool Fact:
Although redside shiners are considered important food for trout and other sport fish, they also compete with these trout for food.
