Brown trout originally came from Europe and parts of Asia, but have been introduced throughout much of the U.S. The brown trout is a popular sport fish in Utah, occurring now in many of the coldwater streams throughout the state.
Like other trout, they lay their eggs in fast moving areas of streams. The females clear the gravel, then the male and female pass over these “redds”, laying eggs and fertilizing them. You can see these cleared areas in streams during mating season.
Brown trout are not fussy eaters. They eat other fish, as well as insects, amphibians, crayfish and even little mammals that fall in the water.
Cool Fact:
Brown trout also eat the eggs and young of cutthroat trout and other sport fishes in Utah, so they are considered a problem in some areas.
