Mountain bluebirds can be found in the meadows, rangeland and the edges of forests in mountainous areas. They are found in the Swaner area during the summer but fly farther south or to lower elevations in the winter.
Mountain bluebirds eat insects that they catch “on the fly”.
They nest in hollow cavities in trees. The babies are helpless when first hatched and the mother stays with them for up to a week while the father finds food for the mother and the babies.
Putting up nest boxes for mountain bluebirds may encourage more bluebirds to nest in an area.
Cool Fact:
Because mountain bluebirds like cleared areas, their numbers may increase when humans move into an area and start clearing away vegetation.
