Cinnamon teal are found throughout Utah during the summer, but move south in the winter. They live in lakes, wetlands and slow moving streams. They are “dabbling ducks”, which means they are not fussy eaters, eating plants, seeds, and small aquatic animals.
Female cinnamon teals are plain brown, which helps them hide when they are nesting. The males, however, are well named. They are a beautiful reddish brown color that seems to glow, especially during breeding season when the colors are extra bright. Their wings have green and white patches that you can see when they fly.
Cool Fact:
Sometimes other ducks lay their eggs in Cinnamon Teal nests, letting the Cinnamon Teals raise their babies.
However, Cinnamon Teals sometimes do the same thing – leaving their eggs in another duck’s nest for someone else to raise them!
