Coots are common throughout Utah, usually found in ponds or very slow moving water, where they feed on aquatic plants.
They often build floating plant platforms for their nests, or may nest on the ground or on branches near water.
Coot adults have bright red eyes and a white bill but otherwise are black and grey. Their babies, however, have red bills and spikey red feathers on their heads!
Cool Fact:
Coots do not have webbed feet, which may be why they swim through the water in a jerky manner.
