A volunteer cuts branches from a healthy willow plant.
Volunteers cut off the side branches from the willow. This makes it easier for the willow to grow once it's planted.
Later in the spring, a hole is made for the new willow plant.
The willow is then trimmed to the right height.
The tip of the newly planted willow is painted to help protect it from insects and disease.
As the willow grows, it will begin to provide shade to help keep the stream cool.
