FoodCorps: Connecting Youth to Real Food

FoodCorps formed in California on Earth Day 2009, the day President Obama signed the Kennedy Serve America Act into law. This legislation signaled a new opportunity to engage AmeriCorps in building a more sustainable, healthful, equitable food system. Since then, they have organized a nationwide team of leaders connecting kids to real food and helping youth to grow up healthy. They do this by placing motivated leaders in limited-resource communities for a year of public service. Working under the direction of local partner organizations, FoodCorps implements a three-ingredient recipe for healthy kids. Their Service Members:

  • Teach kids about what healthy food is and where it comes from
  • Build and tend school gardens
  • Bring high-quality local food into public school cafeterias

Since August 15, 2012, FoodCorps has reached 63,580 children, started 347 garden projects, produced 23,803 pounds of produce harvested for kids, and mobilized 2,673 community volunteers.
