Summary
North Logan is one of 25 cities participating in the Utah Wellbeing Project. This project is designed to assess the wellbeing and local perspectives of city residents and to provide information to city leaders to inform their general planning process.
Eighteen cities participated in an online survey effort in February and March 2020. North Logan City advertised the survey via social media, newsletter and website. All city residents age 18 and over were encouraged to take the online Qualtrics survey, available from February 1, 2020 to March 16, 2020.
A total of 79 completed surveys were recorded during this effort. This report contains descriptive information based on North Logan resident responses and comparisons with other cities from this most recent survey effort. This sample size precludes in-depth analysis of demographic influences on perspectives.
North Logan residents (56) were also surveyed in Summer 2019 in a preliminary effort using iPads at public places such as parks, city offices, grocery stores, etc. A report from that effort can be found at https://usu.edu/utah-wellbeing-project.
Respondent Characteristics
Nearly all of the North Logan survey respondents (97.5%) were full-time residents. The length of residency ranged from 1 to 55 years with an average of 14 years. Over two-thirds of respondents (70%) had lived in North Logan for more than 5 years.
Table 1 details the demographic characteristics of the respondents and allows for comparison with U.S. Census information from the 2014-2018 American Community Survey. As the table shows, females are overrepresented in the resulting survey sample as well as those with a college degree and those age 60 and older. The survey sample underrepresents nonwhites or Latinos, those age 18-39, those with household incomes less than $50,000, and those who are employed. There is no census comparison for religion. These characteristics should be taken into consideration when interpreting the findings from the survey, as survey respondents may not be fully representative of North Logan residents.

According to national and international entities tracking wellbeing, a number of common domains make up wellbeing. In this survey, respondents rated ten domains on a 5-point scale from poor to excellent, and indicated their importance to their overall personal wellbeing on a 5-point scale from not at all important to very important. Based on percentage with a good or excellent rating, the top three highest rated wellbeing domains for respondents were living standards, safety and security, and education. The most important wellbeing domains were safety and security, living standards, mental health, and physical health. The sample size precludes analysis of the influence of demographic characteristics on wellbeing perspectives.
Wellbeing Matrix for North Logan
The graph below illustrates the relationship between the average rating and the average importance of wellbeing domains for survey respondents from North Logan. Physical Health falls into the red quadrant, indicating that it was found to be of higher than average importance, but rated lower than average. Mental Health approaches this quadrant, as it was found to be relatively very important, but its average rating is only slightly higher than the overall average rating of the wellbeing domains. Local Environmental Quality also approaches this quadrant, as its overall rating is lower than the average rating of the domains and its overall importance is only slightly lower than the average importance of all of the domains. It is important to note that all domains have an average rating above 3.0 (moderate) and the importance score for all domains was higher than 3.0 (moderately important).
Community Action & Connections in North Logan
Survey participants were asked about community actions and connectedness to community in North Logan. Both questions were scored on a 5-point scale from not at all (1) to a great deal (5). When asked about the degree to which people take action together in response to local problems or opportunities in North Logan, the average score was 3.63. When asked about the degree they feel connected to their community, the average score was 3.50. The sample size of the survey precludes analysis of the influence of demographic characteristics on community perspectives.
Influence of Landscape on Wellbeing
Survey participants were asked about the influence of landscape features on their wellbeing. Mountains, rivers and streams, city parks, trails, lakes, and farmland were found to have an overwhelmingly positive influence on respondents’ wellbeing. Most respondents indicated that red rock has neither a positive nor a negative influence, but 44% of respondents noted it as having a positive influence.
In terms of development and industry in the landscape, half of respondents noted extractive industry has a negative influence on their wellbeing. Most respondents noted that manufacturing industry has neither a positive nor a negative influence, though almost one-quarter of respondents noted that it has a negative influence. Comparatively, more respondents noted that residential development and commercial development have a positive influence than a negative influence.

Two-thirds of survey respondents indicated that they felt population growth is too fast (66%), while just over a quarter (27%) felt it is just right. Comparatively, 41% of respondents noted that economic development is just right and the rest were split between saying the pace of economic development is too slow (29%) and too fast (19%). Compared to the other cities in the winter 2020 survey, North Logan respondents were similar to those from other cities in feeling population growth was too fast, but had a more divided set of perspectives on the pace of economic development than most other communities.

A Few Quotes
- I love our city. The people are great and when there is an emergency, everyone joins together. I love where I live.
- Having access to public lands and opportunities in the mountains is a huge asset to the community
- I feel that we need more single-family homes with larger yard space in our city. I feel like the multifamily dwellings (apartments, townhomes, etc...) are going up so fast and our city is not prepared for the number of people that will be moving in.
- If they keep building thousands of new houses on the wilderness foothills, then everything that makes North Logan cool is going to be gone. Already the wilderness areas and canyons are getting ruined.
- I couldn't imagine a better place to live and the rural/ small town feel is a MAJOR factor that can never be overstated.
