May Garden Calendar
- Finish planting the garden and put down a good mulch layer for weed control.
- Thin the apples and peaches to one fruit every 5 to 6 inches.
- Plant annuals once the danger of frost is past.
- Fertilize annuals about two weeks after planting to stimulate growth.
- Fertilize the lawn with a high-nitrogen fertilizer.
- Water lawn 1 to ½ inches per week.
- Control broadleaf weeds in the lawn with a 2,4-D product before temperatures are above 85 degrees.
- Spray birch trees to control the bronze birch borer, and ash trees for ash borer.
- Call your local USU Extension Office for the date to begin spraying apple and pear trees to control codling moths and prevent worms in the fruit.
