Distinguishing Features

Size: Grows 18 inches to 3 feet tall.
Flower: Small, .25 to .5 inch, cone shaped, and usually pink, but can be white to purple. Small leaves (bracts) lay flat against the base of the flower head and are topped with a rounded papery margin.
Leaves: First growing season as a rosette. Following season, stems are erect and multi-branched, and covered with fine white hairs that gives them a blue-green color. Leaves are blue-green, toothed or lobed, and covered with fine hair.
Other: Dense colonies can form from widely spreading black bark-covered roots.
