Compared
to other control methods, prevention is the easiest and least expensive.
Unfortunately, it is often overlooked or considered a bother. By suppressing
the spread of weeds we can concentrate available resources on existing
weed populations. Ignoring this method will only allow a hundred new weed
populations to grow while we work on controlling the one.
Prevention
is a cooperative effort on everyone's part. The time required to do the
following may save millions of dollars and prevent an untold amount of
environmental damage.
Preventative Measure
| Agriculture |
• Weed-free seed
• Competitive crops
• Crop rotation and diversity |
• Clean equipment
• Management of feed and manure
• Spot control new plants |
|
| Rangeland
Grazing |
• Proper stocking rate
• Proper seasonal use
• Prevent animal seed dispersal
from infested to non-infested areas |
• Manage for good range condition. A healthy plant
community is less likely to be invaded. |
|
| Recreation |
• Clean off clothes and gear
• Clean pets and stock animals
• Clean vehicles |
• Learn to recognize weeds and report them
• Tread lightly: disturbed areas invite invasion |
|
| Social/Government |
• Laws and enforcement
• Organization
• Education |
• Control seed source: wind-blown and waterways |
