2012 CLASSES 

 

PROPAGATION SERIES

We are please to offer this 5-class series that provides instruction on propagation of garden and landscape plants--everything from seeds to hardwood cuttings, grafting, softwood cuttings, layering and budding.  The series provides training on propagation techniques including demonstrations, hands-on experiences and being able to take home the results of their efforts to add to their own garden and landscape.  Class size is limited.  REGISTER  Click Here

Registration Fee:  $169/member of the OBG/USUBC or $200/general public

February 23 - Class #1  Starting Plants from Seeds  Learn how to start bedding plants and vegetables from seed for your own garden and landscape.  Class includes seeds, soil-less planting media, containers and labels.

March 22 - Class #2  Hard Cuttings  Class provides instruction on propagating plants such as willows, cottonwoods, and grapes using hardwood cutting techniques.  Includes caring for propagation tools plus sharpening grafting knives.

April 19 - Class #3  Softwood Cuttings  Learn how to propagate more difficult to root and interior plants by softwood cuttings using the resources available at home. Special emphasis is placed on using rooting hormones and moisture control systems.  Discussion includes layering as a propagation method.

May 24 - Class #4  Grafting Fruit Trees  Graft your own fruit trees for planting in your home garden.  This ancient art is easier than it appears so enjoy becoming a true horticulturist.  Materials provided include rootstock, scion wood, and grafting supplies necessary for successful grafting.

July 19 - Class #5  Summer Budding of Fruit & Shade Trees  Summer budding is one of the best ways to propagate.  The class covers chip and t-budding techniques and partipants will bud fruit or shade trees to take home for their own garden or landscape.

MATERIALS INCLUDED IN THE CLASS:  Felco #2 hand shear, Victorinox grafting knife, handouts, seeds, cuttings, containers, rooting media, and other supplies.

 THE "JOYS" OF RAISED BED GARDENING

        Thursday, April 14   12-1 pm – Ogden Botanical Gardens

      Saturday, April 16  11-12 noon - USU Botanical Center Utah House
Local gardening authors, Joy Bossi and Karen Bastow, will teach many advantages of growing vegetables and herbs using the raised bed method.  Learn from this famous gardening duo how to efficiently use garden space, and economize to save money.

COLORFUL CONTAINERS AND PERFECT POTS

      Thursday, May 19   12-1 pm – Ogden Botanical Gardens

      Saturday, May 21  9-10:30 am - USU Botanical Center tent on 50 West

Master Gardener, Kay Ballif, will teach how to create and maintain colorful containers all summer long.  Learn about many premium annuals available for sun or shade, and how to design with them for spectacular displays.

COMPOSTING BASICS

      Saturday, May 21   11-12 – USU Botanical Center – Utah House

Learn the benefits and techniques of composting to get the most ouf of growing space in the garden.  Compost is a rich soil amendment that benefits garden plants, house plants and the environment by diverting compostable material from the landfill.

TREE WALK

      Saturday, June 18   9-10:30 am – USU Botanical Center Varga Arboretum

Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the newly dedicated Varga Arboretum.  Come learn from horticulturist, JayDee Gunnell, some of the unique characteristics of over 150 different species of trees that perform well in the Intermountain area, and might do well in your own landscape.

MAKE THE PERFECT SALSA

Richard Anderson, USUBC Greenhouse Manager, will take you through the steps of harvesting and saving your favorite flower garden seeds.

APPLES GALORE

Our apple and cheese tasting event is quickly becoming everyone’s fall favorite.  Join us to sample Utah’s finest artisan cheeses and locally grown apples.  They are the perfect combination for a great end to the season.

FRUIT TREE GRAFTING

      Saturday, April 16  9-10:30 am – USU Botanical Center Greenhouse

Learn how to perpetuate that perfect fruit tree.  This hands-on workshop reveals the techniques behind grafting.  Participants receive two apple trees to take home.
