    Protect Your Water

Learn how water quality is influenced and what you can do to protect your water.

Two types of water pollution are point source and nonpoint source pollution. Point source pollution comes from a pipe or other conduit from specific discharges (i.e. industry or waste water treatment plant). Nonpoint source pollution comes from runoff over landscapes (i.e. urban areas, agriculture lands, forestry lands) and carries pollutants to waterbodies.

The Clean Water Act regulates the point source pollution, but, in Utah, nonpoint source pollution is managed on a voluntary basis and requires community action. The government and partners provide assistance to reduce the nonpoint source pollution through incentives, technical support, and education.
